Mom Inc.

Talking to most moms who also have a business, the consensus seems to be that they wouldn't have it any other way. I've been doing it for fourteen years and I can't even imagine it any other way. But it certainly isn't all sunshine and roses. The question that I get asked the most is, "How do you do it all?" Truthfully, I don't know. Some days are harder than others, that's for sure. But I didn't wake up from my carefree lifestyle one day to discover that I had three children, a business, a never ending supply of laundry and a house in dire need of repair. It happened gradually and I was able to establish patterns and routines and boundaries (very important) at a more manageable pace. Still, I always felt like I was doing it alone. I didn't have many friends in similar situations and even in the ones I had, business woes just weren't discussed.

A couple of years ago, I was interviewed for the book Mom Inc. (I even have a tiny nugget of wisdom appear in the book). It was so refreshing to be able to talk about the nitty gritty of owning a business and running a household at the same time only to have understanding nods and similar stories reflected back at me. Danielle and Amy, authors of Mom Inc., have done a great job putting together a realistic view of life as a mother and business owner with countless testimonies from an incredible roster of women. I just wish it had been in print 14 years ago.
