nook collective
Tucked away in a small shop in Kensington Market is nook collective: a place where creative freelancers can meet, exchange ideas, gather inspiration and expand their vision. It's the kind of place that makes me miss Toronto.
Earlier this year, nook asked me if I would like to do a workshop. (Yes, please.) I couldn't do a straight-forward letterpress class because extremely heavy equipment together with long-distance travel is just a recipe for disaster. Instead, the workshop is all about designing for letterpress. Inspired by the many questions I often get from illustrators and designers, the class will explore the possibilities and limitations of the unique world of letterpress printing.
We'll begin with a brief tour of the different printing processes. We'll arrive at letterpress where the discussion will become more specific. I will have a small letterpress with me to help explain the physicality of letterpress and how it works. We'll explore the pitfalls and possibilities found in such techniques as: overlapping, outlining, unregistered printing, registered printing, blind impressions, visual embossing, and more. Through these examples we will discuss how different techniques should be handled when preparing digital files. All participants are encouraged to bring a piece of work they would like to see letterpressed. The group will collaboratively discuss each piece as a candidate for letterpress with the information gained in the class. This portion of the class is invaluable since each design poses its own set of unique challenges.
