An Unlined Jacket
March 21, 2025
I am a big believer in the power of beauty. When lines, colours and patterns all converge to move something beyond being simply utilitarian that’s where I find beauty. Even when the beauty is hidden in the background the effect is palpable. This unlined jacket is the perfect example. In truth, a lined jacket is faster to make than an unlined one but visually they couldn’t be more different. Even though most people will never see the inside of this jacket, every time that #polychromaticwardrobe goes to slip it on, she will see all of the beauty hiding inside and then wrap herself in it. It can’t help but affect how she steps out into the world. That is the power of beauty, even the beauty you cannot see.
#polychromaticwardrobe has the most incredible stash of fabrics. She had this coarse weave linen that she thought would be perfect for this project and she was absolutely right. This linen is not like most linens I’ve seen. Despite being such a thick weave, the fabric is incredible silky and has a wonderfully fluid drape. Also in her stash were these beautiful Liberty of London cotton scraps that were leftover from a previous project. The colour couldn’t have been any more perfect. We used it for all of the bindings and pocket linings and by the time we were done, there really wasn’t anything left. Bindings are such a great way to use up leftover fabric.
