The Granny Square Solution
March 30, 2026
After spinning my first bobbin of yarn, I learned how to ply. This is the result. A wonky but beautiful 2-ply yarn. I really wanted to make something with my very first ball of homespun yarn. The truth is that there really aren’t many projects that use such a small amount. Then I thought of granny squares and I couldn’t get it out of my head. The Agnes Sweater Vest by Bethany Lynne has been on my wish list for a while now and I thought, maybe, just maybe, I would have enough grey yarn for that.
I wouldn’t have any yarn to speak of if it wasn’t for Anna sharing her knowledge, encouraging me to keep going, and exhibiting a lot of patience in the process. So when I went to find some yarn in my stash that might compliment this little ball of grey I was thrilled to find this off-white ball and this pink ball. Both of them were gifted to me by Anna. The pink one was a skein of yarn that she dyed with madder root and the off-white one is a ball that she hand spun herself. I love the colours together and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my first yarn than to pair it in a project with yarn from the person who taught me.
The off-white ball has little flecks of pink and aqua that are hard to see in the photo. They really come alive when put up against the other two yarns.
Now comes the fun part. The part where I experiment with colour and pattern. The trick will be to stop experimenting and settle on a single one. Easier said than done.
