The Tenements

Tenement housing has a turbulent past. It’s impossible not to remember the poverty, overcrowding, disease, and hardship. The buildings that survive seem to be settling into modern times with a different association. It helps that families of ten or more aren’t squeezing themselves into a single flat to try and make a go of it. The plumbing and electricity have also improved things quite a bit. We were lucky to stay in two different ones on our trip. From the first glimpse of the staircase, I felt right at home.
