A Teal Sanda

I’m sure you all know about my love for wool so I think it’s time I go on the record and declare wool to be my favourite fibre of all. It has the shapeshifting abilities of a mythological creature: knit t-shirts, blazers, dress pants, work clothes, fancy dresses, winter coats. There’s no end to the possibilities. But boiled wool is something special. It doesn’t fray, it’s very warm, it’s firm but moves fluidly, the stitches sink right in and it submits to an iron at the mere sight of it. It’s a dream to sew. This beautiful teal colour was the icing on the cake.
This one was made using the Sanda Coat Pattern from Merchant & Mills. The design is both clever and modern. We changed the neckline to be a little more close fitting and turned the rounded collar into a more traditional pointed collar. I really like how it turned out.
We also added a slit down the sides.
I mentioned that boiled wool doesn’t fray but since we used a beautiful piece of William Morris Marigold fabric for the pockets and there was enough left over to make some bias binding, we used it to finish some of the edges on the inside. No one sees it but it adds a little something every time the coat gets put on or taken off.
And no coat is complete without a loop for hanging.
