Some New Old Spools
February 27, 2026
Having managed to spin an entire bobbin of “yarn”, I needed to move it over to a spare so that I could practise some more. Practise, practise, practise.
I didn’t have any but I felt like I had seen old spools in every single antique store I’d ever been in. I thought it would be a great place to look instead of buying some new ones. The antique store near me is pretty big so I was surprised that after combing that store for about an hour I hadn’t found a single one. Then, as I rounded the last corner, a whole box full came into view. I’m glad I showed some restraint and only went home with four. Sanding them down was a lot more work than I imagined it would be. I had to be pretty aggressive in order to get the red paint off and the shape of them made it hard to hold and sand them at the same time.
I’m glad I persevered. After a bit of primer, some paint and a little wax on the bars, they are functioning well and looking fantastic while doing it.
