Truffle Hound
September 29, 2026
Reese has two exceptional gifts. The first is her voice and most people wouldn’t call it a gift. She’s quite possibly the loudest dog I’ve ever heard. When you compare the volume to the size of her body, it’s really quite impressive. The second is her sense of smell. Most dogs have an impressive sense of smell but (and I am completely biased when I say this) hers is impressive even among canines.
After watching The Truffle Hunters (If you haven’t seen it, you should watch it. It’s a beautiful, joyful movie. And it’s full of dogs.) I have harboured this secret fantasy that I could train Reese to be a Truffle Hunter. I have no doubt that she could do it. The real problem is the lack of truffles in Nova Scotia. What we do have are chanterelles. Chanterelles might not fetch the big money like truffles do but they still make a nice meal. If only I knew where the chanterelles were growing, I would train Reese in a heartbeat. If you’re reading this and you know a secret, or not so secret, place to go where we would be allowed to forage please let me know. Reese and I would have the time of our lives.
For now, in the absence of truffles and chantrelles, we went in search of as many mushrooms as we could find. For photographic purposes only. Some of these look too scary to even touch, never mind eat.
